DIY Grocery List/Reminder Board

Ever had an area that you knew could be put to better use (or clean/declutter) with something different in the place of what you currently have?

Yeah? Well, that’s where is project started.

The key chain holder that holds the ‘junk’

I had this keyring holder (to the left) that we have had for YEARS.

Cluttered mess, right? Right! Ugh, caused me so much stress because of how cluttered it was. πŸ˜‘

So, I’ve had an idea for awhile about doing a grocery list that uses parchment paper (or painters paper).

I had seen some links on Pinterest to a different tutorial (and to Etsy pages where i could buy one for $40+) BUT when I finally took the key holder down and measured it those designs would NOT fit between the door frame and the light switch. πŸ‘ŽπŸ˜©

[The tutorial that I found you can see hereΒ – it uses pallet wood. I just used what I had on hand]

I was going to give up but measured and was going to take a chance with the materials I had on have.

With this case I needed:

  • 1 inch by 10 inch piece of wood

I didn’t stain prior to because I wasn’t 100% if it would work out (or that I would have right sizes of stuff) but it’s easier to stain it all first!
  • 1 inch by 2 inch furring strip
  • 2 – pipe straps
  • 18 inch black iron pipe (1/2 inch)
  • Stain (gloves & paper towels/napkins)
  • 1.5 inch wood screws
  • 0.75 inch wood screws
  • Brown parchment/painters paper
  • Picture hanger piece to attach to the back for hanging
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Plywood (1/4 inch thick)
  1. I took my 1 in by 10 in piece of wood and cut it to 19.75 inches, so I now had a 9.75-ish inch wide by 19.75 inches tall.
  2. I then cut my 1 in by 2 in furring strip into two (2) 2.5 in pieces.
  3. For the left hand side of this take the plywood and cut a piece that is 18.75 inch long and 1 inch wide.
  4. Stain the 1 in x 10 in piece of wood, the two furring strips, and the piece of plywood that was cut.
  5. Take the 18 in black pipe and slide the parchment/painters paper onto the pipe.
  6. Place the pipe straps on each end of the black pipe (over the grooves) and then place the 1 in by 2 in pieces cut from the furring strips and secure everything to the wood.
  7. Place the stained plywood over the paper and secure it on both sides with 0.75 wood screws. If the paper does not move and seems stuck loosen the screws up slightly.
  8. Attach a picture hanger to the back and viola! You are done!

To get your list to take to the store (or just remove what you have drawn/written on it you just pull the paper through the little strip of plywood and rip!

*I added two permanent markers with a piece of twine tied to the top pipe strap to always have it available but that is completely optional*

Do you have something that you seen that you have been inspired to try to create with your own spin on it? If so, let me know!

Do you have something that you want a DIY tutorial on how to create because you can follow instructions but don’t really do too well with creating your own out of thin air (and we all know there are those Pins out there that lead to nothing leaving you filling sad)? If so – let me know here and if it is something within my skill set I will try it and give you a breakdown tutorial!

Completed & hung!

  1. I need to make onw of these, because I am constantly remembering things that I need to get from the store, but never have pen and paper lying around. Then I forget to write it down all together and don’t remember to get it from the store.

  2. This is such a neat idea! I haven’t seen anything like it before, but it is so cute and functional! I am seriously impressed!

    1. Thank you Charissa! I can’t either. Most of the time I do remember to take this list with me tho since it is right by the garage door! πŸ˜‰
If you do make one let me know – I would love to see how yours turns out!

  3. I love this DIY project! It’s pretty and practical and fits your space perfectly. And it’s nice to have a central list everyone has access to so the whole family can add to it throughout the week as needed!

    1. Thanks Racheal! I was SO happy I was able to find a way to fit it in the space I had – our oldest daughter (she’s 5) actually goes and steals the markers off of it to draw on some of her papers. Children … LOL

  4. I need to utilize this soooo bad! I am constantly thinking β€œI have to remember to pick xxxx from the store” then when I actually make it to a store, I can never remember the things I needed

    1. YES! ALL. OF. THIS. That is EXACTLY why I made this happen πŸ˜‚
If you read the blog about this season of my life i talk about that πŸ˜‚πŸ˜
