Meet the Family

Hello everyone πŸ‘‹

My name is Cassie and I am a full-time farmers wife, mommy, business owner, Jesus lover, planner and planning obsessed, number nerd, technology junkie, and an all-things DIY addict. By trade I’m a work-from-home insurance account manager for an Allstate agent.

My husband and I live in our farmhouse that sits on 10 acres in Southeast Missouri.

Our front porch view is breathtaking as it overlooks some of the ground that we rent to farm (currently planted in soy beans) and teh pasture/hay ground of our neighbor. The family picture that is above was actually taken below our home.

Our home

My husband (Garrett) and I have been married since October 2010 but have known each other since we were around 3-4 years old, when his mom (my mother in law) babysat me!

Garrett is my biggest supporter (along with my mom) and most dedicated husband and father.Β He is a coffee addict, a meat eater (no meal can NOT have meat in our house πŸ’), a fly by the seat of his pants type of person, and a non-DIY’r πŸ˜‚. He is one of the hardest working men I have ever met but he does have some lazy streaks. He is NOT a morning person and is obsessed with farming – he was the reason we even started this journey to begin with. Garrett has a Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science and every one always ‘teased’ him that he was going to college to be a farmer and he would quickly object that he wasn’t – his goal was to be a crop consultant/soil & tissue sampler. He was for awhile and then a salesman at a local COOP for many years to support our family and our farm but recently (April 2018) we made the leap of faith for him to just farm full-time.

Since we have been married we have also been bitten by the travel bug and traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, and several states! We absolutely LOVE to experience new places, food, and adventures! We are big history buffs and love sightseeing.

Our farming journey started not long after our marriage started.

In the fall of 2011 we purchased our first tractor and spring 2012 we planted our first crop on the 30 acres we started with (YES, only 30!)

Ever since then we have been growing our farming operation, year over year.

Our family grew too, by 2 little girls. πŸ‘£πŸ‘£

Their names are Abigail & Rebekah.

Rebekah – 2016
Abigail – 2013

Abigail, the oldest, is our cautious child and our little diva. She likes to get dirty but if she can wear her heels and dress to do it she does (oven, everywhere. She doesn’t care if it’s mud – she gets in it dolled up).

Rebekah, the youngest, is our dare devil and we also refer to her as our ‘sour patch child’ as she is super sweet AND super sour. The best way to describe her is she’s the kid that will come up and hug your leg and then turn around and bite you!

Anyway, both great kids – just onrey in their own ways. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜œ

We also have two dogs, Autumn and Brownie.

Autumn

Autumn is a full-blooded black lab and she joined our family in 2010 as a wedding present gift from some friends of my mom. She use to be Garrett retriever on duck hunts but once we had Abigail she wouldn’t leave the house to go hunting with him. She’s a great protector and we love her dearly.

Brownie

Brownie is, as I lovingly refer to him, a mutt. He showed up around our home in July 2015 and I fed him as he was skin and bones. Well, long story short – Abigail fell in love with him when my mom and I had our yard sale in August 2015 and asked to keep him. She asked her dad, rounded up some stray dollar bills in the house and ‘paid’ for Brownie (she then promptly took the money back from dad πŸ˜‚). He’s what we refer to as the ‘farm dog’ as he makes every pass in front of the planter or combine and loves to run. We have an underground fence but it doesn’t matter if dad gets in the truck and drives down the gravel – he gets a run and GOESSSSSS.

Back to the farming stuff – as of 2018 we are farming 850 acres – all of it is rented except around eight acres at our home.

In 2016 we also added a hog farm to our operation (jointly with my in-laws) and are working to grow it as well into a successful and profitable operation.

Since 2011 we have learned a lot as first generation farmers (lots of EXPENSIVE & frustrating lessons) but it has all been SO worth it.

With us learning so much I figured it might help others out to learn what we have learned without the trial & error.

I also want to help share wisdom with finances, technology (I love trying new things!), DIY projects, and just struggles and wins in parenting as well. As I said, maybe help others avoid the trial and error step.

I hope we can/do help you in YOUR journey from ours. Whether it is farming, family, financial, tech-y, or DIY – you have found the right place!

We are SO very blessed & thankful to have you taking a look at all our blog has to offer and we hope you decide to stick around – subscribe to our blog and share your experiences in comments any time. πŸ’“

So, anyway, hang on for the wild ride … We’ve got a lot of ‘ground’ to cover. 🚜
